MICAH Branching Out: The Development of “The Place to Heal”

Several years ago, the MICAH team began to sense a call to expand further beyond NW Minnesota. These yearnings have led us on an exciting journey to the point where we are embarking upon an expansion to multiple sites around the United States.

Although we have long been involved in ‘off-site‘ teaching and retreat work: The Traveling Art Show, the 5-Day Academy, and numerous other events throughout the region and the country, this new movement seemed like a call to expand our permanent presence to other locations.

Our first response to this desire to broaden our reach led us to contact various groups and communities in North America. This allowed us to find out what other folks with similar inclinations are up to and it led to the development of some wonderful relationships. These efforts led us to, among others, the Watershed community in Winnipeg, the Mennonite Worker in Minneapolis, and the Nurturing Communities Project out of Chicago. Interestingly, many of these other groups were also feeling a similar call to expand and meet others beyond their normal reach.

Then Debra got her new job at the Penny George Institute in Minneapolis and the movement outward was well underway.

As we continued to pray and reflect we began to ask, “What would it be like to ‘franchise’ the work of MICAH to other parts of the country?” Using the word ‘franchise’ almost seemed blasphemous for a spiritual endeavor, but why wouldn’t we want to make the work of MICAH available to others in their local setting?

Initially, it appeared as if AZ might be the first location for this new undertaking, which we named The Place to Heal. However, the abrupt departure of our colleague there has ended that idea.

So, we are now continuing to discern and ponder, and while we are tremendously excited about this new undertaking it seems as if it will take a bit longer to be born.

Maybe you’d like to have The Place to Heal in your area?
